When I showed up at the Whole this Thursday morning I was greeted by the sight of burned books, busted plastic and torn apart flood lights. A little investigation shows that it was a car they were driving, there were two people that got out, but only one went over the fence and into the land. That person then commenced to toss a wheel barrel onto the greeters table, breaking it, tear off the flood lights from their mount and then smash in some of the art barns remaining windows. Oddly they left the other set alone. I guess once they realized they were Plexiglas and did not deliver a satisfying enough effect when broken they moved on to the glass bricks that were along the retaining wall. It was a short burst of destructive behavior, and thank the Goddess and other spirits that are watching over the land, the vandals did not go any farther into the land, or try to burn anything other then some books. They could have lit half the desert on fire.
So this is were I ask.....how many times does out sacred ground need to be defiled before we take its safety seriously? So many have tried to give there time and lives to living on the land to keep is safe, but every single one of them that I have talked to, and my own experience, is that there was little to no support from the tribe while they were out there. ?!?!?!!??!???!?!?!?! Support does not mean money. It is water and food, company every once and a while, propane and gas, etc.... And yet, as a fairly large group of people, we failed to do even that for our Guardian's. So what is it going to take for us to take this seriously? ...Perhaps when everything is burned to the ground by some bored teenagers we might figure it out.

Re: Vandalism at the Whole
Fri, July 11, 2008 - 9:50 PMJust a thought, and a question for those that are savvy of such things. How hard would it be to set up a PayPal account for the Whole and its live in Guardians? One or two people may not be able to afford the $ needed to keep our beloved 3SW protected on a full time basis, ( and should not have to ) but I know even just twenty of us could donate just enough to add up to what is needed. And if it is more then 20 people. Well, who knows. The sky is the limit after all. ( I am personally picturing a solar grid and more advanced water reclamation equipment. What are your dreams on the matter? ) There is a strong infrastructure in place now that can organize and manage such an endeavour. I know money doesn't make the world go round...... but it sure make moving in a positive direction much easier. And for some it is a part of life that is easier to give then time and labor. I work on the land, live within her for weeks at a time....and I rarely have extra money to give. Then there are those that are on the opposite side of such a coin. This is simply an idea, a new one that has not been discussed with anyone....yet. This is a place for the voices of our tribe to be heard. I believe that this is a subject that should be shared with as many as needed, as many as designed. -

Re: Vandalism at the Whole
Sat, July 12, 2008 - 8:25 AMhey jhal,
first, you rock. it's awesome that you're spending as much time at the whole as you are since the 1st incident. it is an amazing space and i honor *all* of its care-takers both onsite and otherwise.
2nd, it's simple to set up a PP donation system. 3sw would need a PP account. once that's created just go to merchant tools and somewhere relatively obvious you'll see the wizards to create a donation button for the site. if someone does set this up and runs into any snags, just ping me and i'll be glad to help get this configured (dr. blue/isaac/bruce, etc all have my digits and email). i think it's a fine idea. you never know when someone will click that 'make donation' link, and every bit is helpful.
i'd love to see the community keep asking for what it needs. there are many of us who aren't close by who can help in other creative ways like this PP idea that you have suggested.
love to all,
kalimama
